Descriptive statistics is a branch of statistics that focuses on the collection, organisation, analysis and presentation of data. It is used to describe and summarise numerical and categorical data in a clear and concise manner.
Descriptive statistics can be used in artificial intelligence and machine learning to explore and understand a dataset before applying more advanced analysis techniques. Some of the most common descriptive statistics measures are mean, median, mode, standard deviation and range. These measures provide information about the distribution, centrality and variability of the data.
Descriptive statistics can also include the construction of graphs and charts to help visualise data effectively. Some of the most common graphs are histograms, box and whisker plots and scatter plots.
Unlike inferential statistics,which seeks to draw conclusions, descriptive statistics seeks only a simple description of the data.
