Evolutionary algorithm

Concept and definition

Evolutionary algorithm

What is Evolutionary algorithm?

An evolutionary algorithm is a type of search and optimisation algorithm inspired by biological evolution. This algorithm is used in artificial intelligence and machine learning to find solutions to complex problems that may be difficult to solve using traditional methods.

The evolutionary algorithm mimics the process of natural selection in which the fittest individuals survive and reproduce, while the less fit die or are eliminated. In an evolutionary algorithm, a population of potential solutions is evaluated according to its ability to solve a given problem. The fittest individuals are then selected and combined to produce a new generation of potential solutions, which are evaluated again to select the fittest individuals and so on until a satisfactory solution is found.

Evolutionary algorithms are used in a wide variety of applications, such as optimisation of mathematical functions, circuit design, route planning, industrial process control, and engineering design and modelling.
