Object detection

Concept and definition

Object detection

What is Object detection?

Object detection is a fundamental task in artificial intelligence and machine learning that consists of identifying and locating specific objects within an image or video. The goal of object detection is to generate a set of bounding boxes surrounding the objects of interest in an image or video, as well as to classify each object according to its corresponding category.

In other words, object detection is a technique that allows artificial intelligence systems to detect and recognise the presence of objects in an image or video, which is essential for many practical applications such as autonomous driving, security surveillance and robotics.
