Image segmentation

Concept and definition

Image segmentation

What is Image segmentation?

Image segmentation is the process of dividing a digital image into several regions or segments, each of which corresponds to a specific object or background in the image. Image segmentation is an important step in many image processing processes, such as object detection, feature measurement and image information extraction. In the context of artificial intelligence and machine learning, image segmentation is often used as a pre-processing step to improve the accuracy of machine learning models. Image segmentation algorithms can be based on thresholding techniques, edge detection, region growing, among others.
